A community has come together from the Blackdown Hills all in the name of charity.

Villagers from Churchinford were pulled together under the notable leadership of Paul Thomas and completed their “Three Counties – Coast to Coast” charity bike ride with deserved pride.

Almost 90 cyclists from Churchinford and surrounding local villages pedalled an undulating 74 miles from Minehead to Charmouth and raised over £25,000 which will benefit 3 charities, Bike4cancer, Musgrove’s Beacon Centre and the Blackdown Hills Community bus fund.

The cyclists who set off from 7.30am in Minehead weren’t the only champs of the day, they were accompanied by a support team in vans, minibuses, a Taunton’s Bicycle Chain mechanic and smiling Churchinford locals who gave up all day to marshal, feed, water and clap them on ‘til the gusty, cold seafront of Charmouth.

Some 20kg of flapjacks had been baked by locals along with donations made from Bookers to support the riders and help with energy levels.

The Smeatharpe WI provided a hearty lunch in the Village Pavilion at the 50 mile point which set them for the last leg of the journey to Charmouth.

Paul commented “The weather was not ideal on the day, it was hard work for all involved but I give really big thanks to the riders, families, sponsors, marshals and locals at the pub, we managed to raise a staggering amount for local charities and again prove what a special community we have.”
