The Natonal Trust has welcomed it’s newest team member to the Blackdown Hills, Emma Jones who will be providing lots of opportunities to support the National Trust’s hard work to help save Wellington Monument.
She joins the team as the National Trust’s first community fundraising and engagement officer after two-years as a community fundraiser at Somerset Wildlife Trust.
‘We’re excited to be pioneering community fundraising within the National Trust and believe that our work to save Wellington Monument is exactly the right project to welcome this new role’ said Helen Sharp, Wellington Monument project manager. ‘Emma is a fantastic addition to an already passionate team and will help us work with the community around Wellington.’
Emma said, ‘I am so looking forward to encouraging fundraising at a grass roots level with big and small fundraising projects welcome to help secure the future of Wellington Monument. A project of this scale needs the full force of the local community behind it.’
At 175ft tall, the monument is the tallest three-sided obelisk in the world. It has had a chequered history of structural problems right from its early days, but after years of surveying and research the National Trust announced earlier this year that repair work for the most badly damaged areas will be starting in late spring 2019 and will continue for much of 2020. The Trust is fundraising towards the remaining £2 million needed to repair the whole monument.
As part of the project Emma and the team will be looking for volunteers to help. This could look like helping Emma deliver events, supporting community fundraising projects in aid of the projects or doing some fundraising of your own.
