Young People in care bring art to the Brewhouse

Somerset Young People in Care joined forces with a group of South West street artists to create a beautiful mural at the Brewhouse Arts Theatre, Taunton. The Somerset in Care Council (SICC) is a group of 12 to 18 year olds, mostly in foster care, who give up much of their own time to help others and work on community projects.

SICC were delighted to be invited to this fun and rewarding workshop at the Brewhouse, where they worked with a street art group known as ‘The Paintsmiths’ over two days in the October Half Term.

They found out all about graffiti and street art before creating their own piece together. The finished artwork will be on show at the Brewhouse until the New Year.

Councillor Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, expressed her gratitude to the Brewhouse Theatre and the Paintsmiths for hosting the art workshop and congratulated all those involved on the beautiful artwork produced: “This mural not only represents a stunning work of art that the public can now enjoy, it’s also emblematic of the achievements of the Somerset In Care Council themselves. The mural is shining example of the talent and dedication shown by our young people in care. It’s so important they get the opportunity to demonstrate these talents and are supported in achieving their potential.”

This workshop was funded by Arts Council England as part of the Brewhouse’s 40th year celebrations and organised by Dion Sears, Learning and Participation Manager at the theatre.

Dion said: “We are really pleased to be offering creative opportunities for young people at the Brewhouse.  The programme is growing each season and projects such as this one help us to engage with a wide range of people and offer a little extra support to those who might not usually take part.  The finished mural is bright, colourful and reflects the interests of the Somerset In Care Council who participated.  We hope they will visit again soon and feel part of the Brewhouse community as a result.”
