Somerset residents with Learning Disabilities are being sought to help create support group in Taunton that will help get their voices heard,
Peer Support Groups have already been formed in Bridgwater, Yeovil and Frome and Somerset County Council wants to see one set-up in the County Town.
These groups enable people with Learning Disabilities to meet together in a safe space, talk about their experiences and share their views.
Group members will also be able to attend the Learning Disability Partnership Board who help councils, health, police and other groups their experiences and views to improve services for people with learning disabilities and their carers.
In addition to the meetings users will also be given access to dedicated social media channels.
The established groups have been a big success and the Council wants to replicate this in Taunton.
Councillor David Huxtable, Cabinet member for Adults Services believes that these support groups are key to assisting in independent living.
He said: “It’s really important that we understand our residents’ needs and these groups have been a big help. We want to help people with Learning Disabilities live their life the way that they want to, with the right support.
“The peer support groups allow people to meet who face similar challenges and share their experiences. The initial groups formed have seen great interaction, and we now want to bring that success to Taunton”.
