Somerset CCC Continue Partnership with Selworthy

Somerset CCC Continue Partnership with Selworthy

Club Captain, Tom Abell and opening batsman Eddie Byrom spent the day at Selworthy School recently as part of the education partnership between the two organisations.

Selworthy School is a co-educational special school for children and young people with learning disabilities aged 4 to 19.

Tom and Eddie visited the school to help delivery the numeracy element of the four-part programme designed to benefit the children at the school.

The two players were given a tour of the school by Head Teacher, Mark Ruffett and then helped to deliver a special cricket-based maths session. The session required the learners to work with Tom and Eddie in order to help solve maths problems using the numbers 6, 4, 1 and 0.

After an entertaining and educational session, the players then visited another classroom where they read to the children and listened whilst the children read to them. To finish the day the players then took an active role in the end of day choir and assembly.

At the end of the day Tom Abell said: “This is my second visit to the school and once again it was a great experience. The maths session was based around scoring and the number of balls in an over and things like that. The students really seemed to buy in to it and we all had a really good time. It was a great day and it’s always good to finish with choir, which is always a highlight of these visits.

“There are some incredible children and some incredible staff at the school and it’s a joy to be involved with them in a programme like this.”

It was Eddie Byrom’s first visit to Selworthy School and he thoroughly enjoyed the experience. “I absolutely loved it,” he said. “I can’t wait to go back again to be honest. It was a great insight in to what goes on at the school and the interaction with the children was fantastic. To see the joy on their faces was amazing.”

Head Teacher Mark Ruffett said: “It was an absolute pleasure to meet Tom and Eddie. They both engaged with our learners fantastically well and their performances in choir were superb! The relationship that we have built up with Somerset County Cricket Club is going from strength to strength and is continuing to bring benefits to our school.”

Spencer Bishop, who runs the Club’s Community Engagement Programme, said: “It’s great to see the players and the children interacting so well and I know that Tom and Eddie genuinely had a great time. We are really proud that this initiative has been so successful and would like to thank all the staff and children at the school for welcoming us in to their environment.”

The partnership covers four topics during the course of the year and these are:

Healthy eating – George Bartlett, Ben Green, Tim Rouse and Ollie Sale visited the school and helped the children to cook a healthy lunch.
Numeracy – Tom Abell and Eddie Byrom visited the school and helped to deliver a cricket themed maths session.
Literacy – Students will visit the Cooper Associates County Ground and have a tour.  This will be followed by a mock press conference.  The students will then spend the afternoon in a hospitality suite writing a report of their day.
Physical activity – Students will visit the Cooper Associates County Ground and have an hour long fun training session in the indoor Centre of Excellence.
