One week left to register to vote

Voters across Somerset are being urged to make sure they are on the register for the County Council elections next month.

Residents will go to the polls on Thursday, 4 May, to have their say on who fills the 55 seats available on the Council. To be able to vote you have to be on the Electoral Register and the deadline for making sure your name is on the list is Thursday, 13 April.

At the beginning of March there were 418,000 registered voters in the county. Nationally figures show that younger people, private renters and people who have lived at an address for less than one year are less likely to be registered to vote.

Each of the 55 seats is a chance to get involved with the huge range of services that the council is responsible for and champion local causes and issues.

A spokesperson for the district and county councils said: “There’s still a week to go so if you are eligible to vote but not registered you still have time.

“These elections only come around once every four years and we urge everyone to take the chance to get involved”.

District councils run the elections process on behalf of the County Council, including administering the voter registration.

Anyone eligible to vote but not already on the electoral register can go online by visiting HERE or by contacting your local district council.
