He was rewarded in the Clinical Service of the Year category in recognition of his exceptionally good practice in caring for people with macular conditions.

One patient who wrote to the charity to nominate Edward praised his ‘skill, patience, kindness and ability to explain clinical matters clearly’, and for ‘keeping constantly abreast of research and development’ into macular disease. The entry also described him as ‘a superb doctor, surgeon and team leader’.

Edward said: “It is a great privilege to have been chosen for this award, particularly as the nominations come from our patients. The whole team in Taunton continues to work hard to develop the service to improve the experience of patients and to support them living with macular degeneration.”

Edward received his award from Macular Society chairman John Dunston at the charity’s national annual conference, at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel in London on 22 September.

Running for a tenth year, the Macular Society Awards for Excellence is run by the charity to celebrate the inspirational work done to provide services and care for people with macular disease all over the UK.

There were also prizes for Optician / Optometrist of the Year; Rising Star of the Year, a Chairman’s Award for Volunteering, and Chairman’s Award for Fundraising.

The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss.

Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “The commitment and dedication shown by Edward is clear to see from the tremendous feedback we’ve received about his work. He really has made an incredible difference to the lives of people with macular conditions living in the local community, and we’re delighted his efforts have been recognised with this richly-deserved award.”
