THE Mayor of Taunton Deane for 2016/17, Cllr Vivienne Stock-Williams, has presented money raised during her year in office to her three nominated charities.
The former Mayor worked tirelessly throughout the year for her chosen charities – the Children’s Hospice South West, the Somerset National Gardens Scheme and Reminiscence Learning.
All the money raised through special events was split between them with additional donations received specifically for one or other of the nominated charities bringing the totals to £5,771.05 for the Children’s Hospice South West, £1,434.05 for the National Gardens Scheme and £1,743.85 for Reminiscence Learning.
Cllr Stock-Williams presented the cheques to representatives of the three charities at a reception in Deane House on Friday (11th August).
She said: “It was a real pleasure to promote these three good causes which benefit a wide cross section of the community. It was fascinating to learn more about the work of each charity and how they help and support people across Taunton Deane. I am delighted that so much money has been raised for them and would like to thank everyone who made a donation.”
Cllr Stock-Williams visited all three SW Children’s Hospices during her year in office where she learned about the work of staff and local volunteers in caring for children with life-limiting illnesses and was privileged to meet the founder, Eddie Farwell MBE, at the 25th anniversary celebration.
She enjoyed visits to open gardens at Court House, East Quantoxhead, the small garden with sculptures at Flaxpool, the historic gardens and arboretum at Nynehead Court, Elworthy Cottage Garden which is planted to encourage wildlife and the romantic gardens at Cothay Manor.
Cllr Stock-Williams also took part in a variety of events for the Reminiscence Learning’s Archie Project which involves inter-generational dementia awareness work linking local primary schools with residential care homes, including a duck obstacle race dressed as an inflatable duck to launch Archie’s Party, and Archie’s Record Breaking Birthday Party which aimed to enter the Guinness Book of Records with the largest number of human scarecrows assembled in one place.
Fiona Mahoney Chief Executive of Reminiscence Learning said: “This generous donation will allow us to connect yet another primary school to a care home in our borough as part of the Archie Project”.
