Mayor opens Cats Protection’s new homing centre

Cats Protection celebrated the launch of its new Taunton Homing and Information Centre with an open day recently.

Members of the public joined in the fun as Mayor of Taunton Deane, Councillor Vivienne Stock-Williams, cut a ribbon to officially open the centre, at Blackdown Garden Centre in West Buckland, Wellington.

Children enjoyed a host of games and activities and visitors were able to meet some of the cats currently in the charity’s care.

With five custom-built cat pens, the new centre will focus on finding homes for cats that are ready to go to a new home and will provide a convenient information hub for cat owners to find out more about caring for their pet.

Cats Protection’s Development Manager Sadie Dalton said: “The day was a huge success, with many visitors coming to meet the cats and to wish us well for the future. During our first month we have found homes for six cats in our care, which is a great start.

“We’re so grateful for the support of the local community and we look forward to helping many local people find their perfect pet in the future.”

The new centre will be open from 10am-4pm Monday to Sunday. As well as accommodating up to 10 cats available for homing, the centre will be an information hub for cat owners or anyone considering adopting a cat, with free cat care guides available.

Sadie added: “Cats Protection has so many lovely cats in its care desperate to find a new owner. We’re hoping this new centre will make it even easier for people to find out about adopting from us and to help them find their perfect pet.

“Adopting a cat from Cats Protection has many benefits, including the peace of mind of knowing your new pet has been examined by a veterinary surgeon. All our cats will also have been microchipped, vaccinated, neutered if old enough and will have four weeks free insurance.”

After opening the centre, Mayor of Taunton Deane Councillor Vivienne Stock-Williams, said: “Cat lovers in the Taunton and Wellington area are fortunate that a Cats Protection Homing and Information Centre has been created locally.  The calm surroundings, manned by a devoted team of staff and volunteers, provide an ideal environment for cats and potential owners to get acquainted before going home together to start a new life.”
