Local Funeral Director Team become Dementia Friends

Local Taunton business Crescent Funeral Services recently took time to find out more about Dementia and the impact it has on an individual and their family, to better understand the challenges that may be faced by them when arranging a funeral service.

The team at Crescent Funerals asked Roger Knight, a Dementia Champion to visit them this week to deliver the ‘Dementia Friends’ training. The Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia.

It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, talks and acts about the condition. Dementia Friends was launched to tackle the stigma and lack of understanding that means many people with the condition
experience loneliness and social exclusion.

A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action and at Crescent Funeral Services they will be looking at how their approach, services and Funeral Home can be tailored to better meet the needs of those with Dementia.

At the training, Roger Knight said ‘It is heartening to see a Funeral Director wanting to learn more about Dementia and how to help families who are living with Dementia. The attention and enthusiasm paid to me during the training proved that Crescent Funeral Services really do care about the service they
provide and I am confident that they will wear their badges with pride and provide a service that is adapted help those with Dementia.’

Simon Helliar-Moore, Funeral Director at Crescent Funeral Services said “Providing a tailored and individualised service to every family we have the privilege of helping is at the very heart of what we try to do here. In learning about Dementia, we are better prepared in supporting our families through a
very difficult and emotional time.

Office Manager, Robert Helliar-Moore, is already an Autism Champion and has 15 years’ experience in helping those diagnosed with Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and Dyslexia. Robert uses his knowledge and skills to support those needing our help, to enable them to access our services more easily. Furthering our knowledge and understanding to ensure we deliver a truly inclusive service for all was, without question, the next step for us.”

Crescent Funeral Services has registered with the Dementia Friends Initiative and will be seeking to obtain further training from the Alzheimer’s society to allow Robert to train as a Dementia Champion.
