The County Stores, one of Taunton’s most iconic independent shops, has today announced proposals to close in January 2017.
The store, which includes a coffee cellar, gift shop, bakery and restaurant, also houses the Post Office for the centre of Taunton.
It is thought that the 61 staff are likely to be made redundant.
Jeanette commented on social media “I’m gutted. I will miss it all and our wonderful customers. It’s such a sad day”.
Mike Mellor also said “Taunton is losing all its old stores which give the town its identity”.
Caroline Banks mentioned “So sad, it’s the end of an era”.
The family-run store has been trading in Taunton since 1850.
