College set to host Spectacular Spring Concert

Richard Huish College is set to host a spectacular Spring Concert for the community at the Temple Methodist Church on 30th April 2019.

The showcase will feature works of immense complexity including Danse Macabre by Saint-Saëns, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March and Mass in C by Beethoven.

The College’s Symphony Orchestra, which is made up of 50-60 players of string, brass and woodwind instruments will perform a combination of traditional and contemporary pieces.

Music has really taken centre stage at Huish this year as they aim to extend more opportunities in Taunton for the Arts. The opening of a brand new music facility in Autumn 2018 has been followed by extraordinary Pop, Jazz & Folk and Autumn concerts, a dazzling sold out performance of ‘Chicago – High School Edition’ at the Brewhouse Theatre in January, and professional workshops by artists from Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

The Spring Concert features challenging pieces, rare to be heard by students of this age range and will demonstrate some of the best talent the College has to offer.

The new Aspen Music Centre is one of the most modern and well-equipped music suites and performance facilities in the Country and has really aided the musicians mature to the high level required for the Spring Concert. The facilities have also benefitted local primary school choir, St George’s Catholic School, who have accessed the recording studios, and The Centre for Young Musicians, Taunton (CYMT), who utilise the facilities at weekends and for their Summer Music Programmes.

The partnership between Huish and CYMT, a division of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, began in early 2017. CYMT offers children and young adults aged 5-18 with an interest in music the opportunity to showcase and enhance their musical talents. The partnership has provided many opportunities to local students providing concerts and workshops by top visiting musicians, most recently Apollo’s Cabinet in March.

Huish’ production of Chicago – High School Edition sold out the 377 seat Brewhouse theatre for three nights back in January.

Speaking of the talent of Huish musicians, cast and crew at ‘Chicago – High School Edition’, Chris Davies, CBE, DL, Youth Lead for Lord Lieutenant of Somerset representative commented “The stars shone brilliantly, but the smaller parts and chorus were all superb. Energetic, talented, and disciplined. All the unseen supporting crew must have been magnificent in order to deliver such a professional production. The whole thing was a joy.”

The Spring Concert will be held at the Temple Methodist Church on Tuesday 30th April at 7.30pm.

Tickets: Adults £5, Students £3, Family £12.

Kathryn Foyle, Course Manager of Music at Huish added, “The Spring Concert is really shaping out as something to behold, it is a concert not to be missed by lovers of classical music. The musicians perform with inspiring enthusiasm and an admirable level of maturity and it is a pleasure to bring these works for the community to enjoy.”
