Half Term at The Museum of Somerset

February Half Term at The Museum of Somerset

This February half term families can go on a journey of discovery at the Museum of Somerset. The theme of the week is ‘Explore and Discover’ and to begin the adventure is the popular Castle Day.

Inspired by Taunton’s 12th century castle, the Museum is holding a day of activities on Sunday 17 February. Young visitors can win their spurs at Knight School and make their own bows and arrows, mini catapults and peg dragons in craft sessions. Taunton Garrison will be doing historical demonstrations based on the English Civil War. There will also be a special children’s trail and tours to behind-the-scenes areas of the castle. The day runs from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm and costs £3 per person (age 3+) or £10 for a family.

Throughout the week, from Monday 18 to Saturday 23 February, visitors can learn about John Hanning Speke, the Somerset man who discovered the source of the Nile in 1862. Children can go exploring to find the African animals hidden around the Museum in the Explorer Trail, costing £1. In addition, from Tuesday to Friday there will be adventure-themed activities. Children can have a go at making their own telescope, an ancient treasure map or a working compass. Activities will run from 10.30 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm and cost £2.50 per child (ages 3–10.)

Dan Broadbent, Manager at the Museum, said: “We’re looking forward to an adventure-packed week. Taunton Castle is a very special building and it’s great to share its history with visitors on Castle Day. With trails and activities throughout the week, there will be plenty for families to explore and discover.”
