Merger Roadshows ready to roll out

Electoral canvass under way

VOTER registration forms are dropping through letterboxes across Taunton Deane and West Somerset and residents are being urged to return them to ensure that they are registered to be able to voice their opinion in future elections.

Taunton Deane Borough and West Somerset councils are asking residents to look out for the form and to make sure that they respond as soon as possible.

The form ensures that the councils can keep the electoral register up to date and identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

With district council elections taking place for the new Somerset West and Taunton Council on 2 May 2019, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they will be able to take part.

The forms are simple to fill in and can be completed online – details of how to do this are on the form. Residents can also opt to fill in the paper form and post it in the pre-paid envelope, or return them to the councils’ offices in Taunton (Deane House) and Williton (West Somerset House).

The councils’ electoral services spokesman said: “It’s important that residents respond as soon as possible, so we can make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address in our current areas. To make sure you are able to have your say at the elections next year, simply check the form when it arrives and respond as soon as you can.

“If you’re not currently registered, your name will not appear on the form. If you want to register, the easiest way is online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote , or we’ll send you information explaining how to do this in the post. In any case, you will still need to complete the form and send it back to us.”

People who have moved address recently are particularly encouraged to keep an eye out for the form and check the details. The canvass allows residents to make changes to their details – such as a new address. On your electoral registration form you can opt to have your details excluded from the open register. This will mean your details cannot be bought by individuals and commercial organisations.

Residents who have any questions can contact the electoral services team on 01823 358692.
