Clarks shoes to close their Somerset factory

Clarks, a household name for shoe makers have announced plans to close their Somerset factory in Street.

The factory will shut after failing to reach production and cost targets.

A spokesperson commented; “At Clarks, we are constantly evaluating the way we do business, keeping the ever-changing retail landscape and our customer’s needs front of mind.

“In 2017 we announced Morelight, a pilot of our manufacturing concept in Street. Despite best efforts, we have determined that the levels of production and cost targets we hoped for will not be reached in the short to medium term. We are therefore proposing to cease production and close the facility and will now enter a period of consultation into the viability of Morelight.

“We have a strong duty of care to all our employees and will ensure they are actively supported throughout the process.”

The factory first opened in 2017 and brought the manufacturing of Clarks shoes back Somerset since 2006 as production had been moved to the Far East.

The pilot scheme sadly has not worked and so manufacturing will continue to be made outside of the UK.
