Castle Day at the Museum of Somerset

Castle Day at the Museum of Somerset

The Museum of Somerset will be open for a family fun day on Sunday 12 February to celebrate Taunton’s 12th century castle.

Castle Day includes a variety of activities, with something for everyone in the family. Mini tours will provide an opportunity to learn more about the history of Taunton Castle over the centuries.

Taunton Garrison re-enactors will be at the castle throughout the day and, weather permitting, will be firing their muskets. There will also be a ‘Knight School’ for young visitors to learn the skills needed to become a knight, including how to hold a sword and shield.

Other hands-on activities will include dressing up, making a catapult to take home, building a castle keep and making peg dragons. There will be other challenges with a trail around the museum and building a castle out of giant bricks.

Susie Simmons Visitor Services Manager said: “We held our first Castle Day last year and it was a huge success. We are so lucky to have such an amazing building with so much history, and it was a delight to see families enjoying themselves so much and learning about the past at the same time. We have even more activities this year, so are looking forward to a great day.”

Entrance is £3 pp (age 3+) or £10 for a family ticket. There is no need to book. Visitors can just turn up on the day between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm.
