Carols at Wellington Monument
8 December 2017 - 7:15 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
Join Blackdown Hills AONB and the National Trust as we get the festive season underway with an evening of carol singing led by Blackdown Community Choir at Wellington Monument on Friday 8 December from 7.15pm to 9pm.
It’s a chance to experience the magic of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty at night with Wellington Monument lit up for the occasion. A bonfire will keep everyone warm while the singing takes place, with hot drinks and festive refreshments for sale provided by Smeatharpe Women’s Institute.
This year, a free coach will provide lifts to and from the Monument from Longforth in Wellington. The coach has been made possible thanks to contributions from Blackdown Hills AONB and the National Trust, and a generous donation from Redwoods Travel in Hemyock who will be running the coach. The aim is to lessen the environmental impact of cars driving to the event and to open up the event to people who don’t have their own transport.
The Carols at the Monument provide us with a wonderful opportunity to gather together as a community, to appreciate our rich heritage and our starry skies! By putting on a free coach we hope we will be able to welcome a wider range of people to join us in the Blackdown Hills AONB to celebrate the start of the festive season.
While there’s no need to book for the carols, booking for the coach is essential – see Blackdown Hills AONB website for details.
Drivers are encouraged to lift-share if possible as parking at the Monument is limited.
If you’re coming along please bring a torch and wrap up warm. There is a walk of approximately 15 minutes from the car park to the monument on a flat, relatively even, pathway which will be lit with rustic candles. The singing will start at 7.30pm. The event finishes at 9pm.
The Wellington Monument is located three miles south of Wellington in Somerset – Postcode: TA21 9PB | Grid ref: ST 143 167
The carols are free but donations are welcome. Donations will go towards Blackdown Hills Countryside Fund set up to help local nature, heritage and education projects, as well as the National Trust’s Wellington Monument project fund which helps towards the restoration and upkeep of the Wellington Monument and its surrounding countryside.
There is no need to book for the carols but please check the AONB website or call the AONB office on the morning of the event as bad weather may lead to cancellation.
