Council embarks on parking survey

Taunton Deane Borough Council will be carrying out car parking surveys this month (June 2017) to gather information for a new car parking strategy for Taunton.

It will set out a vision for improving the quality of its off-street car parking over the next decade.

The car parking surveys will be carried out at each of the council’s 17 town centre car parks and also at Lidl, Marks & Spencer, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s and Tesco.

Each car park will be surveyed on only one day between Tuesday 13 June and Thursday 22 June 2017. Between three and four car parks will be surveyed each day during the survey period.

The council has appointed leading transport and urban design specialists WSP to carry out the surveys.

The surveys will not affect how people use or access the car parks and users won’t be asked any questions. Car park users will notice that their car is being counted on entering the car park and when they leave it. The surveyors will also count how many vehicles are parked in the car park at regular intervals.

Ian Timms, the council’s Assistant Director for business development, said “One of our key objectives as the local authority is to encourage people to visit our town centre and help our local businesses thrive, and the way that we provide and manage car parking is central to that.

“Our surveys will help inform our parking strategy and ensure that it works for town centre visitors, including those who work, shop, eat, drink and live there. We appreciate people’s patience as these surveys are carried out, but we don’t expect any disruption or inconvenience for existing car parking users or town centre visitors.”
